Tim Atkin MW: “This is the best selection of Chilean wines I ever tasted”

For the fifth version of his annual report, the renowned expert tasted 1,142 labels. He highlighs the high quality of the wines, with 119 samples that received more than 95 points

Atkin praises how Chilean winemakers have developed their confidence: “they know their wines can compete with the very best in the world”.

Renowned British author Tim Atkin MW announced the launch of his report Chile 2021. Unlike the previous editions, this time he was unable to travel to Chile due to current travel restrictions. However, distance was not an impediment to carry out his annual report, for which he tasted the samples at his home in London, making 51 video calls with the winemakers. Despite the change in methodology, the result was more than positive, delivering the highest scores recorded.

Atkin starts saying this line-up was the best he’s ever tasted from Chile, denoting several reasons for this statement. He acknowledges a new sense of self-confidence in national winemakers, which has led them to expand the geographical frontiers of Chilean viticulture, giving Chile “an enviable diversity”. He concludes that “the superior quality of the 2018 vintage has taken their fine wines to new levels” and argues that national whites are “reaching unprecedented quality standards.”

Atkin states that Chile’s challenge is “to get rid of their image of lower value wines” and show consumers the evolution that has taken place in the last decade.

Angélica Valenzuela, Commercial Director of Wines of Chile, highlighted that “Tim emphasizes the great quality of our wines, also recognizing the audacity of our winemakers, in their search for extreme wines, expanding frontiers with passion and professionalism. His review is the honest testimony of a experienced journalist, an expert who knows us deeply ”.
