After the considerable increase in the consumption of organic wines around the world, and with it the appreciation by consumers of products which help to improve our environment, a group of renowned Chilean wineries -all part of Vinos de Chile A.G.- came together to form C.O.W. (Chilean Organic Winegrowers); the first Chilean group of certified organic wine producers.
C.O.W. is made up initially of the following founding wineries: Emiliana, Cono Sur, Koyle, Matetic, Miguel Torres Chile, Odfjell, Veramonte and De Martino and its main purpose is to promote and develop the production and consumption of organic wines cooperatively and globally.
«We seek to collaborate in promoting the consumption of organic wines by strengthening our technological areas, homologating organic standards and taking actions that can help us building the recognition of «CHILEAN ORGANIC WINES».
The sale of organic wines increased more than 20% in 2021 for the founding wineries, with the main destinations being Canada, the US, the Nordic countries and Japan. The Covid-19 Pandemic certainly created a greater awareness in the need of care for the planet and healthier human behaviors, and with it, the demand for organic wines has increased considerably, accelerating a trend already visible in various markets.
According to the latest Wine Intelligence report on Sustainable, Organic and Low Alcohol (SOLA) wines, organic wines have the highest development opportunity index among wines in these categories. The growing trend and opportunity are also reflected in the growing number of wineries that have joined in the production of certified organic wines in the country.
The new group is part of the strategic pillar of Sustainability, an area in which the Chilean wine industry has been making considerable efforts for over 10 years.
C.O.W. relies on the significant support of Vinos de Chile, which will play a supporting role through its R&D department, its legal and research teams, human resources, diffusion platforms and its promotion experience abroad. In addition, C.O.W. is already in contact with government bodies and other organic wine associations worldwide in order to engage in partnerships and cooperation.
