CHILE- All White, All Right!

Decanter International Trophy 2010Chile took home three of the 28 International Trophies awarded at the Decanter World Wine Awards dinner held in the prestigious Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London.

The surprise, however, was that although Chile is well known for the quality of its fine red wines, in this case all three of its International Trophies were awarded to white wines from the cool-climate regions of Elqui, San Antonio, and Bío Bío regions, which clearly reflects and reinforces Chile’s message of growing diversity.

The trophies went to:

  • Casa Marin Cipreses Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2009, San Antonio Valley - owner and winemaker María Luz Marín collected the award in person, and her wine was served at the dinner to great acclaim.
  • Viña Mayu Reserva Sauvignon Blanc 2009, Elqui Valley - another award for the irrepressible Giorgio Flessati who has done so much to elevate the status of the mystical Elqui Valley in northern Chile.
  • Cono Sur Visión Single Vineyard Riesling 2009, Bío Bío Valley - winemaker Adolfo Hurtado is one of the pioneers of the emerging Bío Bío region in the cool south of Chile.

Commenting on the awards Michael Cox, Wines of Chile’s EU Director said “To have Chile winning around a quarter of all the Decanter white wine trophies is a fantastic achievement and an indication of the growing stature of Chile’s cool climate viticulture. No other country won a trophy for Sauvignon Blanc - Chile can be proud of that, and it is the sign of even better times ahead.”

It was a night full of surprises as the trophy for the world’s best sparkling wine went to the English vineyard Ridgeview beating five top Champagnes, and Shiraz from Israel won the Red Rhone varietal trophy, just edging out Falernia’s Alta Tierra Syrah 2007 from the Elqui Valley.
