Viña Maipo was born in 1948 in the town of Maipo, Buin County, located 38 kilometers south of Santiago de Chile.
Maipo was founded as a fortress town in 1583 to defend the area from attacks by the native Indians. As in all towns during Chile’s Colonial period, social life revolved around its Church and a local legend. The town Church was initially built in mid-17th century, and the legend which gave life to our image is the following:
“It has been said for centuries in Maipo that its vineyards have been miraculously protected thanks to a tradition. Every year, people gather at Maipo church to pray for the safeguard of their lands. Surprisingly, the vineyards appear to have been protected ever since.”
