This month in the UK there has been a flurry of wine awards being dished out as the results for Decanter Wine Awards, International Wine Challenge and the Sommelier Wine Challenge were released - and Chile’s wineries came out with some top results.
Decanter Wine Awards
The results for Decanter’s Wine Awards, one of the most prestigious wine magazines in the world, are always highly anticipated and most anticipated of all are the trophies. Chile took home 14 trophies with 6 Platinum Best in Show and 8 Platinum Best in Category awards, and 16 Gold, 114 Silver, 293 Bronze and 186 Commended rankings for wines. International Wine Challenge
These well respected tasting competition sees thousands of world wines being tasted by a panel of experts who award different medals depending on the wines category. This year Chile took home 9 Gold medals, 108 Silver medals, 226 Bronze medals, and 267 Commended medals. Chile also took home XX trophies: Altazor from Undurraga won a double trophy for Best Chilean Cabernet Blend, and Best Chilean Red; Undurraga had another double trophy wine with Terroir Hunter Lo Abarca Sauvignon Blanc for Best Chilean Sauvignon Blanc and Best Chilean White; Carmen’s Lot 08 won the Chilean Carmenere Trophy; Sumaq Reserva Chardonnay from Maycas del Limari won Best Chilean White; and Maray Red Blend took home the Limari Valley Red Blend trophy. Sommelier Wine Awards
The Sommelier Wine Awards, which is a wine contest judged only by sommeliers and seen as an important indication of a wine’s appreciation in the on-trade, saw Chile win an impressive 27 Gold awards, 50 Silver awards, 37 Bronze awards, and 67 Commended. The awards showed the great variety of Chilean wines that can woo the on-trade consumer with gold medals for varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Carmenere, Chardonnay, Malbec, Gewurztraminer, Pais, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc and sparkling.
