After a three days tasting over 500 Chilean wines in China, the panel of Asian and International experts selected the winning wines – and the Annual Wines of Chile Awards 2015 were announced last night in Shanghai!
This year out of the 560 wines tasted, an outstanding 79 wines were rewarded gold, 246 were given silver, and 165 were given bronze. An impressive result, but the most anticipated of the awards though were the trophies.
The top trophy, Best in Show, went to Casas del Bosque for their Pequeñas Producciones Syrah made in Casablanca. The second most anticipated trophy, theBest Premium Red, went out to two wines which were exceptional: Lot 8 Syrah fromLeyda winery in San Antonio, and Antawara’s Reserva de Familia Cabernet Sauvignon.
The winners of the best in category were as follows:
Best Blend – Carmenere/Syrah Reserve, Mayu
Best Cabernet Sauvignon – Casillero del Diablo, Leyenda, Concha y Toro
Best Syrah – Pequeñas Producciones, Casas del Bosque
Best Other Reds – Vigno by Undurraga, and Gran Reserva Malbec by Luis Felipe Edwards (joint)
Best Pinot Noir – Bill Limited Edition, by William Cole Vineyards
Best Chardonnay – 20 Barrels, by Cono Sur
Best Sauvignon Blanc – 20 Barrels, by Cono Sur
Best Carmenere – Casa Amada Reserva, by Casa Silva
The wine judges this year included: sommelier Hiroshi Ishida from Japan, Paul Eun from The Ritz-Carlton Seoul, Singapore-based British Master of Wine Annette Scarfe, British Master of Wine Peter Richards, Joshua Green, publisher and chief editor of Wine & Spirits, Fongyee Walker, the founder and general manager of Dragon & Phoenix Fine Wine Consulting Co., Ltd, China-based French wine lecturer Julien Boulard, CEO and senior lecturer of AWSEC Corinne Mui, Paul Wang, wine critic from Taiwan, and senior wine lecturer Martin Hao, Sophie Liu and Stephen Li from mainland China.
“This year’s AWOCA was a great success in terms of coverage and attendance, and between the judges great team work was achieved during the tastings,” said Claudio Cilveti, Director of Wines of Chile. “The event was held at the innovative Intercontinental 1000 Islands resort which was a real asset in creating a climax in the evening awards ceremony after all the anticipation around the event. Holding the AWOCA here in China is strengthening our position as one of the main wine producers exporting to China, and it was a great experience for everyone!”
