Two Chilean wines in Decanter's Top 50 of 2016

The prestigious UK wine magazine highlighted two Chilean wines as their 'Most Exciting Wines of 2016'.

In a round-up of the best wines tasted over 2016, Decanter magazine in the UK highlighted two Chilean wines within their 50 most exciting wines to try.

Coming in the Top 5 was De Martino's Viejas Tinajas Muscat 2015 from Itata in southern Chile. "A remarkable ochre hue in the glass gives way to vibrant grapey aromas, floral notes and hints of honey," wrote the tasting panel. "There is an impressive weight and on the palate, where the tantalising Muscat character comes through, followed by a touch of earthiness on the finish. So expressive and inviting with a nice tannin structure."

The wine comes from old vines in Itata and is part of the impressive project of De Martino winery to rescue old Chilean winemaking traditions, by ageing the wine in old 'tinajas' or amphorea.

The second Chilean wine in the Top 50 is Casa Marin's Cipreses Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2015 in position 40. "Ultra-crisp on the palate, this has drive, finesse and purity, combined with real minerality and texture on the palate," wrote the panel. "Very aromatically typical Sauvignon Blanc with green pea notes and a touch of sweet fruit. The dazzling acidity will carry it through to develop very well."

Casa Marin has long been recognised as a top Sauvignon Blanc producer in Chile with its unique terroir of Lo Abarca vineyard, just 4km from the coast in San Antonio.

These are certainly two top Chilean wine recommendations to enjoy in the coming year and, according to Decanter, both have an ageing potential that will carry them well into the 2020s. Salud!
