Chile takes home 183 awards & New World Producer of the Year at the Sommelier Wine Awards

Chile stormed the Sommelier Wine Awards taking home an impressive 183 awards in this prestigious tasting competition, and one Chilean winery won New World Producer of the Year.

In the UK's only on-trade wine tasting competition, Chile's wines stood in the limelight as the panel of sommeliers awarded Chile an astonishing 183 awards as well as one Chilean winery winning New World Producer of the Year.

Luis Felipe Edwards wowed the judges so much that they elected the winery for one of three New World Producer of the Year awards: "A breathtaking array of awards from this Chilean producer, including three Golds at a variety of prices, covering not just the favourites, Malbec, Cabernet and Sauvignon, but Cabernet Franc and Rhône-style white blends, marked Luis Felipe Edwards out with style."

The Colchagua winery joined numerous Chilean wineries in being praised for excellent value and quality wines. The judges particularly mentioned Chile as standing out for for its Syrah, Malbec and red blends.

"Chile does make good Malbec," commented Simon Woods, one of the Team Leaders in the competition. "There is a freshness of fruit here compared to the other side of the Andes.’"

Part of the criteria of the judging sommeliers is how well they would see the wines tasted offering excellence in their restaurant menus. Chile offered overall great value and quality according to Erik Simonics from The Savoy in London: "There was very good quality overall, with great price points. Sauvignon Blanc is very trendy, so these wines are great for pubs because of the price. Some of the upper end wines here would not be out of price in fine dining restaurants either."

Bordeaux blends was another section where Chile overdelivered in terms of quality for the price, and also adding a new dimension to the offering. "They were dynamic and fresh," said Laurent Richet from Restaurant Sat Bains. "Ripe fruits, spices, great balance. They would be amazing by the glass and would be great with food."

In total Chile scooped up 183 awards including 27 Gold medals, 50 Silvers, 37 Bronzes, 67 Commended as well as 2 Pub & Bar Trophies. To find out more about the awards visit here.
