Colchagua celebrates its 2nd Annual Inter-Viña Rodeo

All work and no play makes dull winemakers indeed!
The Colchagua Valley, home of rural Chilean huasos and generations of horse lovers, recently hosted the second annual Inter-Winery Rodeo in which 35 “colleras” (pairs of riders) from 23 wineries participated, April 5-6, 2008.

It was a classic rodeo with all the requisite components: the “corrida de vaca”, "movimiento de rienda," the election of the rodeo queen, a cueca competition, great food, great company, and plenty of dancing to conclude the evening.

The corrida de vaca is an event in which a pair of riders display their teamwork to steer the animal around the “medialuna,” or half moon-shaped ring.

They must comply with a series of required steps and then pin the young bull against the padded side of the ring.

Points are earned according to the finesse and positioning of the pin.

This year’s winners were:

1st place: Viña Casa Silva
2nd place: Viña Bisquertt
3rd place: Viña Santa Cruz
4th place: Viña Undurraga

A second important event is the movimiento de rienda, which tests the horsemanship and skills of an individual rider who must put his or her horse through a series of paces, such as bringing the horse to a dead stop from a gallop, tracing figure-eights and other shapes, mounting and dismounting without causing the horse to move, and backing up the horse.

Viña Siegel won the movimiento de rienda category.

No Rodeo would ever be complete without its queen, and this event was no exception:
Señorita Scarlet Mejías, representing Viña Bisquertt, had the honor of wearing this year’s crown.
