Nielsen data to June 2007 has revealed that sales of Chilean wine in the UK have, for the first time, exceeded those of Spain. Chile now has its highest ever share of the UK retail market—6.9% and leapfrogs Spain to lie in 6th position in the country league table—with South Africa now firmly in its sights.

Commenting on the news, Wines of Chile’s UK Director Michael Cox said “Chile is making steady and sustained progress across the board in both volume and value, and this is testimony to the hard work being done by the wineries, and the growing awareness of Chile’s naturally diverse styles of quality wines”
Sales of Chilean wine in the £5 to £10 sector—generally considered to be Chile’s greatest strength—grew by an impressive 26% over the last 12 months, and Chile now sells 14% more wine priced above £5 than South Africa.
Official export statistics issued from Chile for the 12 months to May 2007 confirm that the UK has consolidated its No.1 export position. Chile’s exports to the UK grew by 10% to 9.86 million cases. More impressively, the value of those exports rose by 20% and is now worth US$ 189 million. Total exports from Chile have exceeded US$ 1 billion for the first time.
