Chilean Wines Win more Medals in 2007

Chilean wines have performed extremely well at this year’s International Wine Challenge and Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA’s). This year saw more entries the previous year for both competitions; however more importantly, more medals were received than last year.

636 Chilean wines were entered for this year’s International Wine Challenge (IWC) compared with last year’s 573, however more impressive was the increase in entries that won medals – up from 65.5% in 2006 to 70% in 2007 with the percentage of gold medal winners more than doubling from 0.9% to 2%.

Chile collected the following medals in the International Wine Challenge:
- 13 Gold medals (up from 5 in 2006)
- 68 Silver medals (66 in 2006)
- 142 Bronze medals (up dramatically from 96 in 2006)
- 225 Commended (previously ‘Seal’ – up from 208 in 2006)
Of the wines that won medals at the IWC, 310 retailed at under GBP 9.99, and 38 above GBP 10.00.

For this year’s Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) 408 Chilean wines were entered (13 more wines than in 2006), with 60% of entries winning medals versus 56% in 2006. Of the 408 entries, 322 wines retailed under GBP 9.99 and 86 above GBP 10.00.

At this year’s DWWA’s Chile collected the following:
- 4 Trophies
- 4 Gold medals
- 48 Silver medals
- 89 Bronze medals
- 100 Commended ratings
In 2006 no Gold medals were won versus this year’s 4. This year also the number of Silver medals awarded doubled (24 in 2006) accompanied by a slight increase in Bronze’s awarded.
Chile is in joint fifth place for number of trophies won this year at DWWA’s.
