Chile has some beautiful wines that can play with the big boys, that was the message at the special ‘Chile’s Premier League’ Masterclass Tasting at London International Wine Fair this year.
A group of 43 attendees in the wine trade were taken through 12 super premium wines by expert and Master of Wine, Peter Richards on 3 June 2014 to demonstrate some of the crème de la crème of Chilean wine.
“The Premier League tasting was a showcase of some exciting Chilean wines which express innovation and regionality at a premium price level,” explained Peter Richards. “Really, a chance to show some interesting Chilean wines to key UK wine folk made by more established wineries and, as ever, challenge preconceptions about Chilean wine.”
A white blend, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, three Pinot Noirs, Cinsault, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and red blends were the wines of choice, along with a very special bottle of 1962 Santa Carolina Reserva de la Familia that proved how well Chilean wines can age.
“I featured this wine because I think a lot of what is exciting in Chilean wine right now is being informed by the country’s winemaking history,” added Peter. “Where before Chile was most keen to simply give the markets what they wanted, now they’re just as interested in exploring and expressing their own identity and legacy. This is leading to a raft of innovative, delightful and ground-breaking wines.”
The tasting was part of Wines of Chile’s 3 day presence at one of the most important wine fairs in the world – the London International Wine Fair. Many Chilean wineries came to the fair to show their wines with the trade during the three day fair held in Olympia from 2 – 4 June. The 2015 event will be held 18 – 20th May.
