At this year’s International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC) there were many reasons why the Chilean wine industry had pleasing results. For the first time, the Beautiful South (a collaboration between Wines of Chile, Wines of Argentina and Wines of South Africa) proudly sponsored a trophy at the awards, the UK Wine Importer of the Year. The award went to Awin Barrett Siegel www.abswineagencies.co.
Six other UK importers were shortlisted for the award: Seckford Wine Agencies; Hatch Mansfield; Hallgarten Druitt; Castelnau Wine Agencies; Boutinot; and John E Fells & Son Ltd. It was fitting though that ABS took home the trophy as they are also the importer for the trophy winner of Chilean Wine Producer of the Year, Casas del Bosque. It was a triumphant night for the Casablanca winery as they also scored gold medals for their Late Harvest Riesling 2012 and Syrah Gran Reserva 2011.
The other Chilean wineries shortlisted for the Chilean Wine Producer of the Year trophy were Viña Maipo; Hacienda El Condor; Viña Siegel; and Viña Casa Silva.
This year there was another important accolade to someone experienced in the Chilean wine industry: Jean Smullen (jeansmullen.com) was runner up for the IWSC Communicator of the Year. Although she narrowly missed out on the title to whisky expert Dave Broom, Jean was one of six finalists in the IWSC’s ‘Communicator of the Year’, a title which recognises an exceptional contribution to increasing awareness of wine and spirits. Jean is a great ambassador of Chilean wine ever since she ran the Wines of Chile Ireland office a few years ago, and she still supports Chile’s wine industry by organising and assisting in events occasionally. Congratulations Jean!
