A month after the Beautiful South Tasting in the UK and organisers are collecting their thoughts about this innovative trade show and how to repeat and build on its success next year.
In the first tasting of its kind, the Beautiful South was a combined effort by three wine countries united by hemisphere but unique unto their own: Chile, Argentina and South Africa.
“Before the event, I said that ‘fortune favours the brave’, and I feel the gamble to combine three (competing) countries’ generic tastings under one roof to create an innovative and groundbreaking opportunity, and to showcase what is exciting from the Southern Hemisphere, paid off,” says Wines of Chile Europe Director and one of the organisers of the event, Michael Cox. “There was much positivity before, during, and after the event – and that’s why we wish to repeat the Beautiful South Tasting next September 2014.”
The event attracted around ten percent more than expected, with 1140 visitors over the two day fair. A mixture of trade, press and wine educators attended from the UK, Europe and North America to taste a wide range of wines and participate in thought-provoking seminars hosted by experts such as Tim Atkin MW, Jo Aherne MW and Master Sommelier Ronan Sayburn. Chile’s leading climatologist Fernando Santibañez also gave an interesting insight into how global climate change is affecting wine regions.
Wines were not grouped by country, but rather by importer so attendees could get a balanced insight to three of the most dynamic wine producing countries at the moment. Themed tastings with wines from all three countries included Premium Chardonnays, Old Vine wines, New Generation Winemakers and Red Blends.
“If there was ever an amazing opportunity to source exciting, innovative, and eclectic wines from three of the world’s most innovative and exciting wine countries, then surely this was it,” adds Michael. “Wines of Chile was proud to be part of this great new initiative and the Chilean producers were more than happy to stand shoulder to shoulder with their Andean neighbours and South African amigos in order to present a fresh approach to help alter mindsets and change the status quo. We urge the wine compasses of forward thinking retailers and restaurateurs to be magnetically drawn to the Beautiful South in September 2014!”
