In a rule-changing and innovative step, three of the titans of New World wine have come together for a first-of-its-kind tasting event in London. Calling themselves the ‘Beautiful South’, Wines of Chile, Wines of Argentina and Wines of South Africa will join forces on 11 and 12 September for a vibrant and educative display of what makes Southern Hemisphere wines unique, exciting and – above all – delicious.
With seminars ranging from ‘The Mavericks’ and ‘Pioneers’ to ‘Cool Clients’ and ‘Aging with grace’, the three countries’ wines will be represented by influential journalists and Masters of Wine such as Tim Atkin and Sarah Jane Evans to show why these regions and their wines deserve some serious attention. “Wines of Chile have been doing their own Annual Tasting in the UK for 10 years and we wanted to refresh the concept,” explains WOC Managing Director Claudio Cilveti. “This project is very exciting… this is showing a modern and positive approach to a trade. It will change the way how we approach a very mature and sometimes tired market like the UK.”
As Chile’s biggest existing market – and one of the most important for Argentina and South Africa too – keeping the UK trade engaged and enthused is vital and these tastings are designed to give journalists, sommeliers, the trade and wine lovers a fresh perspective. Rather than treating each other as competition, the southern wine hemispheres are looking at what they have in common to boast about. Diversity, cooler climates, adventurous winemakers and innovative wines are just some of those aspects that are focal points for the tasting.
As well as conventional tastings from each winery, six specially themed tasting tables will highlight different categories of wines across the hemisphere. Each table will each have 99 wines – with 33 from each country – with the following categories: Chardonnays for over £10; ‘Southern Champions’ (top scoring wines); old vines in the New World; regional Cabernet Sauvignons; Red Blends; and Future Stars.
