Last week five independent wine merchants (aka ‘Indies’) from the UK were flown out to Chile for the wine-buying trip of a lifetime.
After a nationwide competition for independent retailers to promote Chilean wine during September, five winners were selected and rewarded with an all expenses paid, week-long trip to wineries in Aconcagua, Casablanca, Cachapoal, Colchagua, San Antonio and Maipo.
This is the third year running for the competition organized by Wines of Chile, which is designed to help boost Chile’s sales in the Indie sector. Wine merchants promoted Chilean wine during September in all sorts of imaginative ways, including in-store displays, wine paired dinners, Chilean music, quiz nights and a variety of other events.
“The entrants really raised the bar this year,” says Michael Cox, European Director of Wines of Chile. “The calibre of entries was outstanding. Merchants showed real commitment and enthusiasm providing their customers with choice and quality whilst educating and persuading their customers to trade up to premium Chile. The winning merchants communicated real passion for Chile.”
The winning independent wine merchants were: Field and Fawcett – York; The Market Square Food and Wine Company – East Grinstead; The Cellar Door at House of Townend – Hull; Palmers Wine Store – Bridport, Dorset; and SH Jones – Banbury.
The winners also took home a £500 cash prize, and ten runners up all received £500 as a contribution to their promotional costs.
