Chile claims five international trophies at 2012 Decanter World Wide Wine Awards reception

Chile wins big at 2012 Decanter World Wide Wine Awards

The Royal Opera House in London was a triumphal scene for Chilean wine at the reception of the 2012 Decanter Worldwide Wine Awards on the evening of September 5.

Claiming an incredible five international trophies in the “Oscars” of the wine industry, Chile was surpassed only by France at the tasting table, receiving more international trophies than any other New World country.

According to Decanter Magazine Publishing Director Sarah Kemp, “Chile has often been seen as producing safe but unexciting wines. The DWWA 2012 results have totally exploded this sentiment ….”

The Decanter World Wide Wines Awards is a prestigious annual competition recognizing innovation and diversity in wine production. Expert judging panels carefully taste and scrutinize each wine – up to four times in the case of international and regional trophies and gold medal winners.

In this year’s competition, Chile was represented with 782 wines out of 14,120 total entries (approximately 5% of all entered wines). Out of this tremendous pool, only 28 wines were honored with international trophies – nearly 20% of which were received by Chilean wineries.

Additional commendation goes to Chile’s Leyda Valley, which produced three of the five international trophy winners.

A recent Decanter press release notes that Leyda “is fast becoming the most talked about grape growing area in the country… its proximity to the Pacific (just 14km away) make[s] for regular cooling fogs and sea breezes, so perfect for aromatic Sauvignon Blancs, subtle Syrahs and perfect Pinot Noirs.”

Chilean winners of Decanter World Wide Wine Awards international trophies are:

· Undurraga, TH Pinot Noir, Leyda, 2010
· Viña Falernia, Alta Tierra Reserva Syrah, Elqui, 2009
· Leyda Reserva Syrah, Leyda, 2010
· Viña San Pedro 1865 single vineyard Sauvignon Blanc, Leyda, 2011
· Casas del Bosque Late Harvest Riesling, Casablanca, 2010

Aside from this remarkable success in the international trophies category, Chile also earned ten regional trophies, six gold medals, and numerous silver and bronze prizes.
