The Drinks Business Magazine’s annual awards presented during the London International Wine Trade Fair in London this week hold a special significance for Chile this year. Cristián López of Viña Concha y Toro was named ‘Man of the Year 2010′ in recognition of his leadership at Concha y Toro UK between 2001 and 2009.
Last year’s DB Woman of the Year, Sue Birch, CEO of Wines of South Africa, presented the award to Cristián López, saying,
The judges were unfaltering in their decision to award this year’s winner. His involvement in setting up and subsequently consolidating the position of a now major brand in the UK market has been phenomenal. But his influence has not just had an effect on the UK market, but on other markets too. As one of the judges stated, his feedback to the holding company has stimulated the success of that company in other markets.
Our 2010 Man of the Year was not however just content with the success of his own brand but he directed his energy and dynamism to generic work for Wines of Chile in the UK. He is admired by his peers, his staff and the UK wine trade at large.
The Drinks Business Magazine is widely read and respected by drinks professionals around the world. These awards, now in their 7th year, recognise excellence in every sector of the industry, from retail to buying, marketing, PR, and packaging design. To be shortlisted for the awards, companies must submit a detailed application showing clear evidence of their achievements. The judging panels include some of the leading figures in the industry.
The Man of the Year Award is especially significant because the nominee may not be presented by his own company, but rather is selected by those who have been awarded the title in previous years. Cristián López now joins a distinguished group of Managing Directors and Chief Executives from the world of wines, beers and spirits:
2009 -Michael Saunders, Managing Director, Bibendum Wine
2008 – Tim How, CEO, Majestic Wine Warehouses
2007 – Paul Walsh, CEO, Diageo
2006 – Karen Bilimoria, Founder & CEO, Cobra
2005 – Roger Gabb, Chairman, Western Wines
2004 – Patrick McGrath MW, Managing Director, Hatch Mansfield
Not only is the Drinks Business Award a great personal honour for Cristián López as he assumes his role as Corporate Director Asia Zone after a decade living and working in the UK, it also acknowledges Concha y Toro and Chile’s growing success in the international wine market.
López was not the only representative of Concha y Toro in the 2010 Drinks Business Awards. Concha y Toro UK was also shortlisted for the Drinks Company of the Year .
