Here they come! 53 delegations of Sommeliers are due to arrive in Santiago de Chile on Saturday, April 10 for the 13th World’s Best Sommelier Competition.
Sommeliers are a hardy bunch and not even a mega-earthquake will deter them from their quest for the title “World’s Best Sommelier.” 53 candidates-all bearing the title of the best in their home country-will compete in the 13th version of this competition organized every three years by the ASI (Association de la Sommellerie Internationale) every three years.
The current version of the World’s Best Sommelier Competition with Moët & Chandon will take place for the first time in Chile on April 10-15, 2010. The competition itself begins on Monday, April 12 and will conclude with a live performance by the three finalists on Thursday, April 15.
The 5-day event also includes numerous opportunities for the delegations-which include the presidents of each national sommelier association and at least one top wine writer from each country-to learn about Chile and Chilean wine. Chilean winemakers will present a number of seminars and thematic tastings, and Viña Tabalí-Leyda will host the inaugural dinner on Saturday. The group will visit Viña Montes and Viña Lapostolle in Colchgua on Sunday, April 11, and over the course of the week the visitors will spend time with Concha y Toro, Santa Carolina, and Ventisquero in Maipo and Viña Errázuriz in Aconcagua, all of which are official sponsors of the event. The sommeliers and their delegations will also have the opportunity to visit other wineries in Casablanca and San Antonio.
Other events include an exclusive dinner sponsored by Moët & Chandon, the Peter Lehmann Australian wine competition, and a Santiago city tour.
The week will draw to a close with a gala ceremony on Thursday evening.
Wines of Chile is proud to join with the Chilean Association of Sommeliers to host this important event. We are happy to extend the warmest welcome to the 200 visitors to our country and wish all of the contestants the best of luck, and of course, a special go-team shout-out goes to Chile’s own contestant, Ricardo Grellet!
