Seminar - 6th Annual Wines of Chile Awards
It’s now a tradition. Once the judges finish evaluating the wines for the Annual Wines of Chile Awards, they present a seminar for members of the local wine community in which they comment on their impressions and discuss a variety of topics pertinent to the industry.
Updated National Viticultural Registry Now Available
Chile’s Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG) has just released its 2007 National Viticultural Registry, which reports the number of hectares planted to vine. The updated report shows a total of 117,559 hectares (290,500 acres) planted to Vitis vinifera, an increase of 766 hectares over the previous year.

Seven New Sommelier Graduates
The Chilean Association of Sommeliers recently hosted the ceremony of the 5th graduating class of its Sommelier School. Chilean sommeliers must successfully complete 3 extensive courses, perform internships, and write and defend a thesis on a topic relevant to the profession.

Chile Comes Out ON TOP– Again!
British wine critic Oz Clarke chooses his Top 250 wines, and Chile’s Viña Falernia’s 2005 Syrah Number Tops the List! The first chapter lists Oz’s Top 40 wines of the year and Chile takes pride of place with the Viña Falernia Elqui Valley Syrah 2005 listed as his number one wine. In fact, another Chilean cool climate wine makes the top 10 with Viña Leyda Garuma Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2007 from the Leyda Valley at number 7 in the ranking.

This year ten US judges—Robert Bradshaw, Patrick Comiskey, Linda Murphy, David Rosengarten, Michael Schachner, Josh Raynolds, Sandy Block, Stuart Roy, Alder Yarrow, and Kevin Zraly—have agreed to tune their palates to hundreds of Chilean wines on January 12–14, 2009.
